1Scope
Thisstandardspecifiesthetechnicalrequirements,testingmethodsandinspectionrulesforretro
reflectorofmotorvehicles.
Thisstandardappliestovarioustyperetroreflectorsusedonmotorcycles,motorvehiclesand
trailers.
2Normativereferences
Thefollowingstandardscontainprovisionswhich,throughreferenceinthistext,constitute
provisionsofthisstandard.Atthetimeofpublication,theeditionsindicatedwerevalid.All
standardsaresubjecttorevision,andpartiestoagreementsbasedonthisstandardareencouraged
toinvestigatethepossibilityofapplyingthemostrecenteditionsofthestandardsindicated
below.

3Definitions
Forthepurposeofthisstandard,followingstandardsareapplied.
3.1RetroReflection
Meansthereflectioninwhichlightisreflectedindirectionsclosetothedirectionfromwhichit
came.Thispropertyismaintainedoverwidevariationsoftheilluminationangle;
3.2RetroReflectingOpticalUnit
Meansacombinationofopticalcomponentsproducingretroreflection;
3.3RetroReflector1)(hereinafterreferredtoas“reflector”)
Meansanassemblycomprisingoneormoreretroreflectingopticalunitsandhavingthefunction
ofretroreflection.
3.4IlluminatingSurfaceofaRetroReflector(hereinafterreferredtoas“illuminatingsurfaceofa
reflector”or“illuminatingsurface”)meansthetotalvisiblesurfaceoftheretroreflectingoptical
unitswhichappearscontinuousatthenormalobservationdistances.
3.5AxisofReference(NC)
Meansacharacteristicaxistobedefinedbythemanufactureroftheretroreflector,whichserves
asreferencelinefortheilluminationanglesinphotometricmeasurementsandinreflectorfitting.

Meanstheintersectionoftheaxisofreferencewiththeilluminatingsurface.Itisspecifiedbythe
manufacturerofthereflector.

3.7ObservationAngle(α)
Meanstheanglebetweenthestraightlinesconnectingthecenterofreferencetothecenterofthe
receiverandtothecentreofthesourceofillumination.
3.8IlluminationAngle(β)
Meanstheanglebetweenthestraightlinesconnectingthecentreofreferencetothecentreofthe
sourceofilluminationandtheaxisofreference.
3.9AngleofRotation(ε)
Meanstheanglethroughwhichtheretroreflectorisrotatedaboutitsaxisofreferencestarting
fromonegivenposition.
3.10IlluminationoftheRetroReflector(E)
Meanstheilluminationmeasuredinaplaneperpendiculartotheincidentraysandatthe
referencecenterofreflector.
3.11Co-efficientofLuminousIntensity(CIL)
Meansthequotientoftheluminousintensityreflectedinthedirectionobservationangle,divided
bytheilluminationofreflectorforgivenilluminationangle,observationangle,andangleof
rotation.
4TechnicalRequirements
4.1GeneralSpecification
4.1.1Reflectorsmustcontinuetofunctionsatisfactorilyinnormaluse.Theoutersurfaceofreflector
mustbesmooth,delicateandeasytoclean,andprotuberancesitmayexhibitmustnotprevent
easycleaningandconvenientmaintenance.Inaddition,theymustnothaveanydefectindesign
ormanufacturethatisdetrimentaltotheirefficientoperation.
4.1.2Thecomponentsofreflectorsmustnotbecapableofbeingeasilydismantled.Theiropticalunits
maynotbereplaceable.
4.1.3ForreflectorofClassIIIAandIVAtheirmeansoffixationshallbesuchthattheyallowastable
anddurableconnectionbetweenthereflectorandthevehicle.
4.2SpecificationofShape,DimensionandStructure
4.2.1Reflectorsaredividedintothreeclassesaccordingtophotometriccharacteristic:ClassIA,Class
IIIA(onlyusedontrailers)andClassIVA.
4.2.2TheshapeoftheilluminatingsurfaceofreflectorinClassIAmustbesimple,otherthantriangle
shape,andnoteasilyconfusedatnormalobservationdistancewithaletter,adigitoratriangle.
Thisnotwithstanding,ashaperesemblingthelettersordigitsofsimpleformO,I,Uor8is
permissible.
4.2.3TheilluminatingsurfaceofreflectorinclassIIIAmusthavetheshapeofanequilateraltriangle.
Iftheword“TOP”isinscribedinonecorner,theapexofthatcornermustbedirectedupwards.
Theilluminatingsurfacemayormaynothaveatitscentreatriangular,non-retroreflectingarea
(withsidesparalleltothoseoftheoutertriangle).Theouteredges(A)ofthetriangular
illuminatingsurfaceshallbebetween150mmand200mmlong.Thewidthofthesides(B),
measuredatrightanglestothelatter,shallbeequaltoatleast20%oftheeffectivelength
betweentheextremitiesoftheilluminatingsurface.Theilluminatingsurfacemayormaynotbe
continuous.Inanycase,theshortestdistancebetweentwoadjacentreflectingopticalunits(C)
mustnotexceed15mm.Thenumberofseparateretroreflectingopticalunitsincludingthecorner

unitsshallnotbelessthanfouroneachsideofthetriangle.Thedimensionrequirementisshown
inFig.1.

4.2.4TheshapeofthelightemittingsurfaceofreflectorinclassIVAmustbesimple,otherthan
triangle,andnoteasilyconfusedatnormalobservationdistanceswithaletter,adigitoratriangle.
However,ashaperesemblingthelettersanddigitsofsimpleform,O,I,Uand8ispermissible.

Thelightemittingsurfaceofthereflectormustbeatleast25cm.
4.2.5Reflectormayconsistofacombinedopticalunitandfilter,whichmustbesodesignedthatthey
cannotbeseperatedundernormalconditionsofuse.Thecolouringoffiltersbymeansofpaintor
varnishisnotpermitted.
4.3Colorimetricspecificationsofreflector
4.3.1Thecolouringofreflectorshallbered,amberorclear(white).
4.3.2WhenthereflectorisilluminatedbystandardilluminantAspecifiedinGB3978,withan
observationangle(α)of20′andailluminationangle(β)ofV=H=0°,(orβofV=±5°,
H=0°forclearreflector),thetrichromaticco-ordinatesofthereflectedluminousfluxmustbe
withinthefollowinglimits:
RED:limittowardsyellow:y≤0.335
limittowardspurple:z≤0.008
AMBER:limittowardsyellow:y≤0.429
limittowardsred:y≥0.398
limittowardswhite:z≤0.007
4.3.3Clearreflcetormustnotproduceaselectivereflection,thatistosay,thetrichromaticco-ordinates
“x”and“y”ofthestandardilluminant“A”usedtoilluminatethereflectormustnotundergoa
changeofmorethan0.01afterreflectionbyreflector.
